Second Shooting at Howsham Hall: A Photographer’s Dream
As a second shooter, the opportunity to work at a venue like Howsham Hall in Yorkshire is a dream come true. This historic country house, nestled amidst the picturesque Howardian Hills, offers a truly enchanting setting for weddings. The sprawling gardens, complete with manicured lawns, winding paths, and picturesque river, provide endless opportunities for capturing stunning portraits. The interior of the hall is equally impressive, boasting ornate details, antique furnishings, and a grand staircase that is simply breath taking.
Working as a second shooter at Howsham Hall allows you to contribute to the overall success of the wedding day while also having the opportunity to showcase your own creative style. You’ll have the chance to capture candid moments, assist the primary photographer, and explore the venue’s hidden gems. With its elegant atmosphere and stunning scenery, Howsham Hall provides a perfect backdrop for creating timeless and beautiful wedding images.
For this wedding I was second shooting for Jack Valentine Photography and my first task after introducing myself to the bride, was to cover the groom prep.
When the guys were ready they went to the billiards room to play snooker and have some fun together.
After some time playing they headed outside for a few photos and to greet guests. There was even an impromptu game of tag.
Howsham Hall Wedding Ceremony
It wasn’t long before it was time for the wedding ceremony. Jack was shooting from the front while I captured them from the back of the room. Before the ceremony started I spend a few minutes with the bridal party while they waited.
Once everyone was ready I captured them as they entered for the wedding ceremony and photographed what I could from the back.

wedding Reception
After the wedding ceremony the couple took a few minutes to themselves before re-joining their guests. I snuck in for a couple of pictures then left them alone.
As the couple took some time together to let their marriage sink in, we got their guests ready for the confetti shot. Jack and the videographer were taking the main position with the couple walking towards them so I shot from the side amongst the guests.
They then spent time with their family, friends and canapes.
Howsham hall couple portraits
We took the couple on a walk around the grounds as they are great to use as a Howsham Hall wedding photographer. They were so natural in front of the camera, a total pleasure to work with.
Wedding Breakfast and Speeches at Howsham Hall
Jack had booked me in until just after the speeches. The speeches were just before the meal so this worked well for me. Everyone enjoyed them and there were some lovely moments.
They were even kind enough to provide me with a meal before I finished. The food was excellent.
Film Photography Portraits
I’ll leave you with a few portraits I shot on film with my Minolta x-700. You may have already spotted a few film photographs earlier.
