I’m a wedding photographer based in Manchester who covers most of the North West, including West Yorkshire. I have a natural style with a calm and relaxed approach which works brilliantly for weddings. I have loads of energy but keep always keep calm when photographing weddings. Read on for my first time as a Tithe Barn Wedding Photographer.
I also offer wedding videography, which is why I was at the Tithe Barn on the Bolton Abbey estate. This job was a last-minute cover for a friend whose household was struck by Covid. Michael Langley asked me to take over his Tithe Barn wedding so the couple would still get their video.
I enjoy barn weddings, so taking this one on was an absolute pleasure. Especially as I have photographed weddings with Mike before, so I wanted to help him.
Tithe Barn Bolton Abbey
The tithe barn is a dream wedding venue on the Bolton Abbey estate. Inside the barn is a wonderful space. Lit with beautiful fairy lights and chandeliers, the barn’s elevated ceiling is stunning, with large wooden beams. The outdoor space is gorgeous, with a covered area in case of bad weather.
The amazing view out over the priory ruins is a great backdrop for group photos.
It’s a venue where you can spend your whole day and not get bored.
Tithe Barn Bolton Abbey Wedding Day
Wedding Prep
My Tithe Barn wedding started in Hotel Rendevouz in Skipton, North Yorkshire. This was where the bride and groom were both getting ready. I spent most of my time with the bride but got some excellent videography of the groom as well.
The wedding photographer was Laura Calderwood, a regular Tithe Barn wedding photographer. I’ve since seen some of her work from the day, and she did a fantastic job.
The Ceremony
When everyone was ready, we headed to Tithe Barn’s wedding venue for the wedding ceremony.
I arrived ahead of the bride, took a quick look around, and admired the ruins of Bolton Abbey. I spoke with the manager and registrars and got all my gear set for the ceremony. A quick warning: Bolton Abbey does not permit drone use on the estate.
The bride and bridesmaids soon arrived, and we went into the ceremony. Tithe Barn is a beautiful but dark venue for a wedding photographer/videographer but nothing my equipment couldn’t handle.
It was a lovely wedding ceremony with many happy smiles.
Wedding Reception
There was a chance for mingling after the ceremony, which as a wedding photographer, I love. You can capture real emotions at this time.
Couple Shots at Bolton Abbey
Laura got what she needed for the group shots then we headed down to the Bolton Abbey estate. While Laura was getting the portraits she required, I happily captured their interactions and added to my B roll of Bolton Abbey and the tithe barn in the distance.
We also walked down to the river for some shots on the bridge. I took the stepping stones halfway across for a better angle and happily didn’t fall in.
Wedding Breakfast at Tithe Barn
We got all the footage needed and headed back to the Tithe Barn for the wedding breakfast in the couple’s rather cool Landrover Defender.
The food was terrific, and the Tithe Barn was kind enough to feed us.
Evening Reception
After the meal, some evening guests began to arrive, and the bride and groom spent a lot of time with their friends and family. While they did this, the venue turned the room around for the evening party.
Sparklers at the Tithe Barn
The married couple wanted to do sparklers; by this point, the night had grown dark enough for them. We all headed outside, and the sparklers passed out. We ensured the bride and groom were (safely) right in the middle of their guests, and Tithe Barn supplied a metal bucket, and then the best man got all the sparklers lit. It was a fantastic sight and a pleasure to photograph and film.
Cutting the Cake and First Dance
So, we gathered all their guests and family for the final part of the formalities ahead of the ensuing party. They’d come from all over Yorkshire to see them married, and they finished it with great style.
The cake was cut in front of the guests and taken away for later, while the couple took to the dance floor. I stayed around for some more partying, then packed away and headed home.
After the Tithe Barn Wedding
I got everything I needed for Mike, including a trip to Bolton Abbey and sparklers in the evening. It was a great day and a beautiful wedding.
I only took the two photos included here and have put together a short highlights video of the day. This is not what the couple received from Mike but instead edited in my style. Enjoy!
